This tradition began in the mid-seventies when we began making rum cakes as gifts for friends and family. Our children have grown up looking forward to "rum cake weekend," that time before the holidays when the house is filled with Christmas music and the baking aroma of roasted nuts, spices, buttery batter soaked in rum, and a kitchen providing a steady flow of bowls to be licked.

Using every dish in the house
We cooked cakes in all shapes and sizes ready to be wrapped and shipped, some as far away as Hawaii and London. As our gift list grew through the years, our one weekend of cooking became two weekends so we began substituting other gifts for rum cakes. Then we started realizing the popularity of our cake. We began hearing tales of friends anticipating the arrival of their rum cake and planning for it when they entertained during the holidays, of teachers disappointed if their cake was replaced with another gift, of mothers hiding their cake in the freezer so it wouldn't disappear with the first serving.

Friends started requesting cakes
. . . . so they could serve them year-round.

After much encouragement from friends and family, we decided to start a business with our product, Ritzy Rum Cake. We designed an elegant packaging combination of a gold foiled gift box and festive gold ribbon with a personalized white greeting card. Although we now produce our cakes in a commercial bakery, each continues to receive the same individual homemade attention.
. . And, we still have "rum cake weekend" at our home. . .
